Working Together: Uprooting Our Lives

Socrates and I met through a mutual friend back in the Fall of 2010. We did not meet in the most perfect of conditions. I had arranged a get together with a bunch of girlfriends and he showed up as the only member of the male species. Needless to say rainbows and fireworks did not erupt into the sky, but when we met once more five months later, that’s when things really started to get interesting.

Without going into the nitty gritty of the ins and outs of our relationship, at least not in this post, I did want to paint a picture of how our relationship worked. For a career path, Socrates was working in Music Entertainment Law as a paralegal while I worked in Events & Marketing at a satellite radio company. We were both working in similarly understood industries but we each wanted more.

From those respective companies we jumped into a publishing powerhouse (him) and the leading concert promoter company (me). Separately we each worked hard and we were learning the ins and outs of our trade. We saved money, continued working hard, believed in each other and seven years after we met, we got married.

Right before we decided to seal the deal with a grand celebration of our union we sat down and discussed what we wanted for ourselves. Here we are entering a whole new world and journeying into the unknown of a married life. Discussions about what we wanted for ourselves, for our sanity and for our relationship, culminated into a dream of working together. That day, we decided to take the plunge and jump off the cliff side by side into the opaque lake below that would swallow us whole.

We first needed to discover what it was we even wanted to do… together. We had always expressed interest in remodeling homes. Learning what it would take to do that full speed required that we both give it our all. Quit whatever job we had and commit full time to the hard task of discovering this business. Outside of the world of HGTV and the fame of Chip & Joanna, The Property Brothers, et al., house remodeling and designing and working through difficulties that may arise are no easy feat for anyone, nonetheless a newlywed couple.

And yet through the entire process of our adventure we’ve been on, I wouldn’t dream of being in any other reality. This reality is my dream. Working with my best friend, the man who I said “I Do” to, debating with him on our design decisions, troubleshooting flare-ups that come up during each project’s construction, researching sustainable solutions and learning what it means to make executive decisions together are all part of this perfect world - For Me.

Whatever the world throws at us I know we’ll figure out how to bat the sh*t out of the ball together. And while we will always make mistakes and cause mishaps in our lives, there’s nothing better than having my BFF by my side to clean up the messes. But that’s what makes us as partners in life the perfect team. We recognize that we will need to compromise with one another and that’s what’s most important for us in this journey we’ve leaped into.
