Saving the Animals One Dog at a Time
When we decided to make the decision to begin our new endeavors in Mazatlán, we knew we needed to keep our eyes open for a volunteering opportunity with animals. We’ve always been animal lovers and with all the stray dogs we see on the streets it behooved us to try and think of ways to make a difference.
Originally, we thought, “Hey let’s buy a big piece of land and let all the dogs frolic all day, everyday.” Then reality set in. We’d need to find a property, figure out how to get staff, partner up with a vet clinic that could treat, rehab, spay and neuter the animals. And to top it all, we’d need money to fund it all continuously. So instead of setting out to do all that, we decided to seek out already existing programs in Mazatlán. Not to say what we wanted to initially do is an impossible task, it simply seemed counterproductive and that we were jumping the gun a bit.
Earlier this year, we serendipitously met the two lovely ladies that run the Mazatlán Animal Rescue (MAR) through a mutual friend. Here was our opportunity to join a team of people who all share the same passion for animals. We could build on an existing project of rescuing, saving, educating, and adopting out the dogs. It was simply kismet to have met these wonderful people during a time when we had originally wanted to conceptualize setting up an organization just like it.
While we continue to work with those at MAR and the Hope Sanctuary, where the animals live, there is always room for growth, improvement and help. Mostly help in the form of time and energy donated by volunteers. Or, if donating economically is more your thing then that always helps too.
Please consider taking home one of our wonderful dogs that are all looking for their forever homes.
