When we set off on our new adventure of renovating and restoring formerly dilapidated homes in Mazatlán, Mexico, we never expected it to be easy. There were many moments during the process, from making our first offer ever on a house to deciding on the type of finish for the window frames, that made us learn to balance our own tastes to compliment one another.

We were learning everything for the first time, together. There were disagreements, but there were also happy-happy joy-joy moments. There were disappointments and sheer shock and awe. There were moments we were talking to the house, aloud, asking for permission to enter and change the entire essence of the house much to the style of the Icelandic folks communicating with their elves.

There were countless hours struggling to compromise on the integrity of how to build and restore consciously. We struggled with efficiencies of our construction timelines often getting frustrated with the laxness of the coastal city’s inhabitants laid-back attitudes which goes against our fast-paced NYC selves.

There was a lot of “adulting” and maturity growth. For the first time we were learning what it was like to be doing things on our own, making our own decisions, and figuring out how to navigate a brand new world.

Looking back on our first year since making this life-altering change in our careers, we wouldn’t change it for anything. To add to the already stressful changes, in the middle of it all, COVID-19 decided to come in and throw off our goals along with the entire world’s.

As we head into Year Two, we are still as wide-eyed and curious about the future and what it will bring us. We hope you will stay with us on our journey (or join us if you just discovered us)!
