Mexicanly-Greek: Our Stylistic Interpretation
When Socrates and I first decided we were going to make this transition, it became apparent very early on that we needed to develop a style we both favored. This can be quite the challenge when we have such different tastes. Socrates tends more modern and bold and I can be a bit too into rustic charm. Ultimately, we knew we needed to collectively develop a design we both could love. So here’s our introduction to Mexicanly-Greek.
We decided to come up with four “must-haves” and expand from those ingredients. Those were as follow:
1. Eco-conscious and Sustainable.
2. Build with climate in mind.
3. Have meaning and history.
4. Must be pleasing to the eye.
These interpretations of our collective style requirements made us realize that they naturally fused two incredible cultures. The Four Ingredients we surmised each represented pre-existing layers from both Greek and Mexican cultures.
Let us introduce the Greek story. Ironically, each of our names have Greek origins; Sophia, meaning Wisdom from Ancient Greek and Socrates, known as the OG Creator of Philosophy. We were both often identified as being from Greece and always had an affinity to the Greek culture, language and country. Stylistically our Greek inspiration is derived from many of the Greek Isles such as Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos and Paros, to name a few. White and blue hues are two of the most commons non-natural colors that we were drawn to.
For the Mexican part of the equation, it’s really quite simple. We both wanted to honor and respect our ancestral lineage. Each of us coming from Mexican parents. With design, there’s surprisingly a generic stereotype to what defines “Mexican style.” People usually think bright colored rugs, metal creatures adorning the walls, terracotta tiles throughout, hacienda-style shaped exteriors, etc. The reality is that there really isn’t one true “Mexican style.” You would discover this very quickly if you ever get the opportunity to tour Mexico. However, what makes a home truly Mexican is being able to utilize much of the natural resources and man-made materials that are created within the zone of the property. Natural colors, natural resources, sourcing local materials, and utilizing local artisans for us, makes a home Mexican.
We feel that our interpretation of what is a Mexicanly-Greek style is not entirely a concept unique to us, but we do love giving our fusion of styles a name.
